Ovechkin in the NHL

Alex was drafted as the number 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL draft. He didn't get to play right away, however, because that year there was a player lockout and the season was cancelled. He stayed in Russia and played another year for the Dynamo.

The next year the NHL was back and Ovechkin was ready for his rookie season. Due to the lockout, there was another celebrated rookie and number one pick entering the league as well. This was Sidney Crosby. Alex outscored Sidney on the year with 106 points and beat out Sidney for the NHL Rookie of the Year Award. He also made the All-Star team his rookie year.

Alex's NHL career did not slow down from there. He won the league MVP award in both 2008 and 2009, leading the league in scoring in 2008. In 2010 he scored his 600th career point and his 300th career goal. He was also named captain of the Washington Capitals.
