Parent's Day
What does Parent's Day celebrate?
Parent's Day is a day to recognize and support the important role that parents play in raising children and building a strong family.
When is Parent's Day celebrated?
It is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July.
Who celebrates this day?
The day is an American observance (not an official holiday) and is celebrated by people who want to spend time with family and let their parents know they are appreciated.
What do people do to celebrate?
The government celebrates by planning family activities and taking the time to point out how important strong parents are to the community. There is a Parent's Day council that awards the Parents of the Year which are chosen from outstanding parents nominated by each state.
People send cards to their parents or take them out to eat. It is also a time to show appreciation to anyone who had played a parent role in your life.
Perhaps more importantly, Parent's Day can be used as a day for parents to re-dedicate their lives to investing in their children, each other, and their families.
History of Parent's Day
The day became a national observance in the United States in 1994 when President Bill Clinton signed it into law. A number of groups worked together to get the day made official.
The National Parent's Day Coalition plays a big role in the day. It organizes events and has run the Parents of the Year award since 2000. You can go to their website as http://www.parentsday.com if you want to learn more about them or even nominate some parents you know for the award.
