Dr. Seuss wrote many famous childrens books such as The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. His books were unique at the time they were released. They were fun, silly, with interesting and imaginative characters and stories. His books are fun to read with great rhymes and colorful illustrations. Kids the world over have loved and grown up with Dr. Seuss' stories and books.
Is Dr. Seuss his real name?
Dr. Seuss is a pen name. The author's real name is Theodore Seuss Geisel. He also has written books under the name Theo LeSieg (Geisel backwards). Seuss comes from his middle name and his mother's maiden name. He put Dr. in front because his dad always wanted him to become a Doctor.
Even though most people pronounce his name Soose (like it rhymes with goose) the Seuss in his real middle name is pronounced Zoice (like it rhymes with voice).
Where did Dr. Seuss grow up?
Theodore Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. He grew up in Springfield and went to college at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. At Dartmouth Ted, which is what his friends and family called him, was editor of the humor magazine The Jack-O-Lantern.
Read Across America
Dr. Seuss' birthday March 2nd has been chosen as the Read Across America Day by the National Education Association (NEA). Each year it's a day for kids, students, and teachers to focus on reading and how important and entertaining it can be.
Fun Facts about Dr. Seuss
- In 2012 there will be four major motion pictures based on Dr. Seuss books. These include How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2002), The Cat in the Hat (2003), Horton Hears a Who (2008), and The Lorax(2012). These movies all had big stars like Jim Carrey, Steve Carrell, and Mike Myers.
- There is a Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden in Springfield, Mass.
- Most of his books are written in a poetic meter called anapestic tetrameter. Hard to say the term, but fun to read in his books!
- He joined the Army during WWII.
- He never had any children of his own.
- He wrote Green Eggs and Ham based on the bet that he couldn't write a book using less than 50 words.
