The Royal Wedding
Prince William, the Duke of York, and Miss Katherine Middleton were married Friday on April 29, 2011. The Royal Wedding took place at Westminster Abby in London and was watched by billions of viewers throughout the world.
Prince William is currently second in line to the throne of England. He is the first son of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. Prince William and Katherine Middleton met at school while attending the University of St. Andrews. Katherine was not part of the royal aristocracy prior to the wedding and was considered a commoner. The two were engaged on October 20, 2010.
The wedding was a massive affair with around 1,900 guests including the Queen and Royal family, rulers from other countries, and many diplomats. The day was declared a public holiday in England so people could celebrate and watch the wedding on television.
The day began with a parade where the couple started out at Buckingham Palace and traveled to Westminster Abby. On the way they passed along St. James Park, Clarence House, Whitehall, and Parliament Square. They returned the same way after the ceremony to go to the reception in the Palace. On the return the couple traveled in a carriage where onlookers could view them and cheer them on.
Prince William's best man was his brother Prince Harry. Katherine's sister Pippa served as her Maid of Honor. The Archbishop of Canterbury officiated the wedding ceremony, which started at 11am local time. For music they had an orchestra and two choirs including Westminster Abbey Choir, Chapel Royal Choir and London Chamber Orchestra. Three hymns were sung during the service including "Guide Me, Oh Thou Great Redeemer and "Love Devine, All Loves Excelling". Katherine wore a white dress with a train made by designer Sarah Burton. She also wore a tiara, or crown, which Queen Elizabeth loaned to her for the occasion. Prince William wore his Irish Guard uniform where he holds the honorary rank of Colonel.
The royal couple plan to live in North Wales on the Isle of Anglesey. Currently Prince William is based there working as a search and rescue pilot for the Royal Air Force. Prince William now has the official title of Duke of Cambridge while Katherine will be called Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge. The couple has postponed their honeymoon where they are rumored to be going to Africa or possibly Jordan.
