The Philadelphia Phillies win the baseball World Series 4-3
The Philadelphia Phillies won the 2008 World Series by taking game 5 in the series 4-3 over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Phillies won the 7 game series 4 games to 1. The final baseball game 5 was one of the most unique and exciting in World Series play as it was rain delayed and then finished a few days later. Because only the last few innings were played Wednesday night, the game ended early and a lot of kids got to stay up and watch the end of the baseball World Series.
The game was close throughout with Philly taking the lead in first inning on a Victorino single. However, the Rays were able to tie the game on an Evan Longoria single in the 4th and a Pena single in the 6th. The Phillies scored another run in the bottom of the 6th to take the lead back at 2-3, but the Rays would answer the bell again in the 7th when Baldelli hit a home run to tie the game at 3-3. Pedro Feliz, however, would bring in the game winning run for the Phillies in the bottom of the 7th inning.
There were lots of stars for both teams during the playoffs and the World Series. Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels got the MVP for going 4-0 in the post season. Brad Lidge also starred in the post season getting the save in the final game and going 7-0 in save opportunities in the post season. He kept his nickname of "Mr. Perfect" finishing the season 48-0 in save opportunities. Many players stepped up throughout the Series to make games exciting and fun to watch.
Fans in Philadelphia are very excited and are glad their long drought is over. This championship is the first major sports championship in Philadelphia since 1983 and the first Major League Baseball championship since 1980. For a town with such great sports fans, this is a welcome win.
Although Tampa Bay Ray teammates and fans are disappointed, they should also be proud of their baseball team. The final game was close with Tampa Bay fighting back time and time again. This team went from worst-to-first this season in their division and then all the way to the World Series. That's quite a great accomplishment. The Rays also have lots of young baseball players and should be very successful in the years to come.
