Brief History of Montenegro:

The land that is today Montenegro first got its name during the 15th century. The area resisted being taken over by the Ottoman Empire for years. During the 1500-1800s Montenegro became a theocracy where the rulers were Bishop Princes and the government was entwined with religion. In 1852 the government separated from the church.

After World War I, Montenegro became a part of Kingdome of the Serb, Croats, and Slovenes and eventually became a part of the country of Yugoslavia. When Yugoslavia became communists and a virtual member of the Soviet Union, so did Montenegro. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Montenegro became part of a federation with Serbia. In 2006 Montenegro declared it independence and became its own country.
